TOLSTOY, Count Leo Nikolaevich(1828-1910). One of the major influence on
 
Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence and his philosophy of religion; six of his works listed in Appendix I to HS; translated his Letter to a Hindoo and had his The Kingdom of God is within You and What is Art? translated into Gujarati. Tolstoy personally endorsed the philosophy of HS. (1532-1623).
TULSIDAS The greatest Hindi poet, and author of Ramcharitmanas; mentioned in
  chs. XIV and XVII.
TYEBJI, Badruddin (1884-1906) Muslim statesman from Bombay; called to the
 
Bar from the Middle Temple (1867); president of the Indian National Congress (1887); prosperous lawyer with an annual Income from legal practice of about Rs. 100,000 (CW 5:142); mentioned in ch. I.
VICTOR EMANUEL II (1820-78). Took part in the war against Austria (1848-9);
  King of Italy (1861-78); mentioned in ch. XV.
WEDDERBURN, Sir William (1838-1918). Joined the Indian Civil Service in 1859
 
and retired in 1887 as chief secretary to the Government of Bombay; after retirement worked for the Indian National Congress becoming its president twice (1889 and 1910); M P for Banff, 1892-1900; Gandhi maintained an extensive correspondence with him and spoke warmly of him in ch. I.
